How to check if a Telegram username is available

Before claiming a name, it's worth making sure it's free. Here are three reliable ways to check whether a username is taken — from the most accurate to the supporting ones.

Method 1. Via settings (most accurate)

Open Settings → Edit profile → Username and type the name you want. Telegram shows the status instantly:

• Green "available" — the name is free and can be claimed.
• Red "taken" — the name is already in use.

This is Telegram's own official check, so it's the most reliable.

Method 2. Via search

Type @name into the Telegram search bar. If an account, channel or bot appears — the name is taken. If nothing is found — it's probably free, but this method isn't 100%: some accounts are hidden from search. So always confirm with Method 1.

Method 3. Via the t.me link

Open the link t.me/name in a browser. If a profile, channel or bot opens — the name is taken. If the page is empty or says the user doesn't exist — the name is likely free.

What to do if the name is taken

Options:

• Pick a close variant — better to add a word than a digit or underscore (they cheapen and "spoil" a name).
• If you really need the name — check whether it's listed for sale on Fragment.
• If you're planning to buy — first value it so you don't overpay.
